Understanding Blocked Drains
Understanding what causes blocked drains can help you act early and avoid more serious drainage problems. Blocked drains are one of the most common drainage issues affecting both domestic and commercial properties. While some develop gradually over time, others can appear suddenly and require immediate attention.
In many cases, blocked drains are caused by everyday waste building up within pipework. Grease, fat, and food particles can solidify and restrict flow, particularly in kitchen drains. In bathrooms, non-flushable items such as wipes and sanitary products are a frequent cause of blockages. Outside, drains can become obstructed by leaves, silt, and debris, especially during periods of heavy rain.
More serious cases of blocked drains may involve structural issues. Tree roots can enter pipework through small cracks, expanding over time and restricting flow. Older drainage systems may also suffer from collapsed sections or misaligned joints, which can lead to recurring problems if not properly identified.
