Impact Moling

Impact moling, also known as horizontal directional drilling or pneumatic piercing, is a trenchless technology used in underground construction and utility installations. Impact moling is an innovative method which involves a compact, high energy pneumatic device which is great for smaller utility services without excavating a trench.

Over the past few years, impact moling has been growing in popularity due to its minimal disruption to the environment, reduced costs, and efficiency in installing utilities like water, gas, electrical lines under roads, railways, existing structures or environmentally sensitive areas.

What is the process of impact moling?

The process of moling begins with a small, powerful pneumatic hammer, often called a “mole” or “missile.” The mole is inserted into a small entrance pit, and compressed air is used to propel it horizontally through the ground. As the mole moves forward, it creates a borehole, displacing soil and debris to the sides. The size of the mole can vary depending on the project’s requirements, but it is typically around 2-4 inches in diameter.

Impact moling offers several advantages, including:

  1. Minimal Disruption: Unlike traditional trench work, impact moling does not require extensive excavation. This means that roads, sidewalks, and landscaping can remain intact, minimising disruptions to the surrounding area. This is particularly valuable in urban environments where surface disturbances can lead to traffic congestion and safety hazards.
  2. Reduced Environmental Impact: Moling is an environmentally friendly option as it minimises soil and groundwater contamination. It also helps preserve tree roots and the natural landscape, making it a sustainable choice for underground utility installation.
  3. Cost Savings: The efficiency moling can lead to cost savings in terms of labour, material, and equipment expenses. The reduced need for restoration and site cleanup further contributes to lower overall project costs.
  4. Versatility: Impact moling can be used in various soil conditions, including clay, sand, and rock. This versatility makes it a viable option for a wide range of projects, from residential installations to large-scale infrastructure development.
  5. Faster Installation: It is typically faster than traditional trenching methods. The process can be completed in a fraction of the time it takes to dig a trench, which is especially important for projects with tight schedules or when utility service needs to be restored promptly.
